More Megapixels = Better Camera

Could it be this simple?

Firstly it must be acknowledged that the higher the megapixel count on a camera sensor the greater the level of detail that can be captured. A 6MP camera for example will capture approx fifty percent more detail than an image from a 4MP sensor.

Obvious right? That level of simplicity is what many camera manufacturers count on in their sales brochures. But could there be more to it? Read on.

Why More Megapixels Can Be Bad

In order for a camera to form an image, it needs to absorb light through the lens and onto a sensor. The more light that enters the lens, the better the resulting image that the sensor can produce.

The problem comes however when manufacturers pack in more and more pixels. The sensor then perceives less light per pixel. Since a picture is comprised of all these pixels together, the camera can struggle to get enough light to generate accurate color and brightness for that pixel.

What does that mean?

Particularly in low light environments, a higher megapixel camera will have a “noisier” image.

Take two different cameras with the same sensor size but with different megapixel ratings, one 4MP the other 8MP. In bright light, the 8MP camera is generally going to have more detail. But what if you want to use it at night or with dim lighting?

Suddenly, the image that the 4MP camera produces might end up being clearer because it does not have the noise levels that the 8MP sensor has.
